Our Current Award

Home - Eco Schools

We are very proud to currently hold the Eco Schools Green Award with Distinction. Last academic year (24/25) we worked on three topics to help us achieve this

The Eco Committee of elected pupils per class have been hard at work promoting their three chosen topics. Here is a brief overview of what we have been doing and what we hope to achieve by the end of the year.

Action 1 – Waste:

our aim is to reduce the amount of waste within the classroom and within the school as a whole. To increase the amount of waste that is recycled, reused or repurposed. To encourage the wider school community e.g. parents, families and Parent Teacher association to adopt some of our ideas and support our efforts. To think about other items that can be reused by holding a swap event. To think about other commonly items that can be recycled e.g. a battery collection point.

We now have paper recycling in classes, new plastic and glass whole school recycle bins, a battery recycling collection point, we think about how much paper we need to use and reduce where possible and on World Book day we held a book swap so that children could bring in a book they no longer read and take home a different one.

Action 2 – Marine:

our aim is to substantially reduce the amount of single use plastic used within school. Also, to encourage parents and the wider community to be more aware of single use plastics.

Our plastic milk bottles and kitchen plastic waste are now recycled via the council scheme. The use on laminated sheets is severely limited especially when not needed for example on classroom displays. In July we promoted the national Plastic awareness campaign.

Action 3 – School Grounds

our aim is to improve the look of our school grounds. Provide areas for growing, for quiet spaces, for wildlife. Reduce the litter and improve outdoor learning opportunities.

We had a school Volunteer Day where members of the school community helped to tidy our outdoor space, weeded the flower beds and helped plant the free trees for schools we received from The Woodland Trust. The children created a peaceful quiet area with a friendship bench on the upper playground. In the Autumn some Class 4 children helped SPEG with the wildflower meadow on the Sports field by planting some plug wildflowers.

We would like to thank those groups who have supported us in our work especially FOSS who are fully committed to joining our Eco cause. They host bags2schools collections during the year they also have  pre-loved uniform sales, they removed the wrapping from the gifts we use in the bran tubs on May Day & Duck Race to reduce waste, and there will be recycling bins on the Green at May Day which will be collected by the council.
