The Results are in!
We had a bigger response this year to our Cut Your Carbon Campaign so thanks to all the families that took part. Anyone who handed back their sheet with some or all of the challenges completed will be given green dojos as a thank you from the Eco Champions Committee and Mr Smith. Certificates will be handed out hopefully this week during our Friday Celebration Assembly. Once the results of the challenges were submitted, we received our own impact report showing how much Carbon savings had been made – an amazing 611.05kgCO2! Imagine how much will be saved once all participating schools have submitted their data. It just shows that every little thing you can do helps the bigger picture.

The Eco Champions have chosen Healthy Living for their first topic. To complement the meat free Monday currently offered by North Yorkshire Council on week 3 of the menu rota, the children were challenged to come up with some enticing meat free options for pack ups. Every class came back with loads of ideas; we sorted through them and chose our favourites. Take a look at our ideas on the attached flyer along with the guidance provided by North Yorkshire for Healthy Lunchboxes. Why not let us know if you have another good idea that we can share with everyone. Please help us by supporting our Healthy Living topic and trying out some of the meat free suggestions. We will be checking in next term with children to see how it is going.

Yesterday the new Eco Champions had their first meeting to discuss what we will be doing this year. Everybody was very keen and participated in the discussions giving their ideas and opinions. What a great start to the new award process. We have decided that our first new topic will be Healthy Living. The Eco Champions have been given their first mission which is to come up with some exciting healthy, meat-free ideas for packed lunches. This is to compliment the meat free Monday on the current menu on week 3 from North Yorkshire Catering. We will select some of the ideas to share with you in the coming weeks. Also, don’t forget that you have just over a week to complete your 6 Cut Your Carbon actions for November. Every action achieved will earn 2 Green dojo’s so, try and do as many as possible.

Eco Schools- Help us help the planet!
We are delighted that eight new Eco Champions have been nominated this year, two from each class. They will take part in regular meetings with Mrs Breckon to plan and encourage green actions across the school. Updates to follow. November is Cut your Carbon Month. This is a nationwide campaign aimed at young people and their families to help tackle carbon emissions. By doing 6 simple and easy actions during November we can collectively make a difference. Many of the actions you may already be doing so simply tick those ones off! Forms will be going home this week.

This is what we are asking you to try:
Make three evening meals plant-based across the month
Meat production is responsible for around 14% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, so discover how delicious cutting carbon can be!
Make any three journeys ‘active’ across the month
Transport creates nearly a quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions. Active travel – such as walking, scooting, wheeling, or cycling – doesn’t emit anything! So, get active and ditch the drive!
Have a device-free day
Electricity makes up about 25% of your home’s carbon footprint. Power down non-essential devices for one day — no gaming, no streaming — and rediscover the joy of offline fun!
Meal plan to reduce food waste for one week
Research suggests that the average person wastes 95kg of food per year! At each stage of the life-cycle of wasted food, from production to rotting at landfill, carbon is produced. Plan your meals, shop smart, and waste less — it’s good for the planet and your wallet!
Lower your washing machine temperature to 30°C for three washes across the month
Washing machines are energy-hungry! Drop the temperature to 30°C for three washes this month and cut carbon without sacrificing clean clothes. Cool it to care!
Turn down the heating by 1°C for a week
Heating is the top source of home carbon emissions in the UK. Turn it down by just 1°C for a week, layer up, and show your love for the planet — one cosy jumper at a time!

At the end of November simply bring back your forms so that our Champions can collect the data. It will also go towards us earning our Green Flag for this year. Who knows you may find that you carry on some of these ideas and make them a regular occurrence!

Following on from our Eco Schools award with distinction that the awarded last year, it is now time for us to start working towards this year’s award. Classes are currently selecting their Eco Champions who will be the ‘Green Voice’ in the classroom promoting recycling and sustainability in all areas. To kick off this year’s work the school will once again be taking part in Carbon Free November. Cut Your Carbon November is a month-long UK-wide challenge supported by Eco-Schools that encourages young people and their families to reduce their carbon footprints by completing six simple actions. The main goals of the campaign are:

  • Raise Awareness: To educate young people about what carbon emissions are and how they contribute to climate change.
  • Promote Sustainable Behaviour: To encourage long-term changes in behaviour that lead to lower carbon footprints.
  • Empower Action: To demonstrate that small, manageable changes at an individual and family level can make a significant difference.

So, watch out for the challenges that will be coming home soon and join us in trying to reduce our carbon footprint.
